Before his eleventh birthday, Harry’s presents included underwhelming items such as a coat-hanger and a pair of Uncle Vernon’s old socks. With Hagrid's arrival on Harry’s eleventh birthday, he gets a birthday cake and, when Hagrid takes him to Diagon Alley for the first time, a snowy owl (who Harry later names Hedwig) as his present.
